What is a programmable oscillator?

A Programmable Oscillator is a type of crystal oscillator that can be programmed to output a specific frequency. It is used in applications where the frequency needs to be changed frequently or where the frequency is not known at the time of design. Programmable oscillators offer users the flexibility to request parts programmed to their desired frequency, offering frequency options that won’t normally be available and often with smaller lead times

Programmable MEMS Oscillators

MEMS oscillators are complete timing systems based on a programmable architecture. Because all aspects of the timing system are included—resonator, oscillator sustaining circuit, phase-locked loop (PLL), temperature compensation, on-chip power-supply regulators, and filters—an extremely large and flexible portfolio of programmable features can be offered to customers.

Applications for programmable oscillators

Programmable oscillators are used in a variety of applications such as board-level designs, FPGA-based systems, networking, storage, video and other embedded applications. They offer flexibility for board-level designs and can support standard and non-standard frequencies and quick frequency experiments for rapid prototyping.

They also offer design flexibility that arises from high-resolution frequency selection for clock tree optimisation. Another big benefit is spread-spectrum modulation for reducing electromagnetic interference (EMI)
