Car HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning)systems can be categorized into manual and automatic types. With capabilities to detect temperature, humidity and air quality automatically, and conduct self-diagnosis and protection, automatic HVAC systems are mostly installed in high-end cars. This kind of systems could provide people with a comfortable environment in cars, avoid manual control which distracts drivers from driving, reduce energy consumption and improve reliability of the system itself.

The control unit of an automatic HVAC system is built with a MCU, motor drivers, high side/low side drivers, motors and solenoid valves, human-machine interface (LCD panel and function buttons) and a number of sensors detecting temperature, pressure, humidity and sunlight, etc. The data collected by solar sensors, temperature sensors located in evaporator and interior/exterior of cars, as well as humidity sensors is transmitted to MCU after processing by signal conditioning circuit. And then MCU calculates based on the data and the settings from human-machine interface to determine the operations of fans, blowers, and air doors for internal/external circulation, air blending, mode selection and defogging, so as to make an optimized environment in cars. The benefits of automatic HVAC systems are not only the convenience they bring to drivers, but also the reliability guaranteed by self-diagnosis function. This function is implemented with pressure switches to detect refrigerant fluid pressure and temperature sensors to monitor condenser’s temperature so that HVAC systems could be protected when any fault is found.
