The increasing number of passengers at underground rail stations is currently raising safety concerns. Apart from the risk that people may fall into the path of train by accident, there are other possibilities of unauthorized entrance, fire and other accident. To make sure these safety hazards can be detected and resolved quickly; underground rail station safety monitoring systems are designed and deployed by countries around the world.

A typical underground rail station safety monitoring system consists of security monitoring and screen door detection subsystem. These subsystems are all rely on a number of sensors. In security monitoring subsystem, image sensors are used to monitor if there is any unauthorized entrance; smoke detectors and temperature sensors are responsible for detecting fire accidents; toxic gas sensors are used to detect toxic gases. Screen door subsystem needs a series of sensors such as infrared or laser sensors, light curtain sensors, and reed or optical proximity sensors to ensure a clear rail path behind doors. Infrared or laser sensors are used to detect if there is any obstacle in the distance from backside of doors to rails. Light curtain sensors can detect if there is any passenger who’s standing between doors or walking through doors to prevent passengers from being caught between screen doors. Reed or optical proximity sensors are used to detect if screen doors are opened or closed.

Some of underground rail station didn’t have screen doors installed on platform. To implement monitoring of obstacles on rails, these stations use a dedicated rail obstacle detection system which consists of laser sensors and image sensors. When the system detects that a passenger has fall onto the rails or any other obstacle is found on rails, a sound and light alarm is raised to inform crew and an emergency message is sent to train drivers to brake trains immediately.

The number and types of sensors used in underground rail station safety monitoring system will increase constantly as new technology keeps evolving. In the future, the underground rail stations installed with reliable and intelligent platform monitoring capabilities can ensure a safer and more comfortable journey for passengers around the world.[-LESS]
